paybox austria is founded as a 100% subsidiary of A1 Telekom Austria with the aim of introducing a payment service for mobile phones in Austria.
As a second pillar, paybox develops a system that replaces the previously printed top up vouchers for prepaid mobile phones with an electronic distribution system. The so-called e-voucher is integrated into the cash register systems of electronics retailers and printed on the receipt. In the following years, the e-voucher will gradually replace the paper receipt.
onlineaufladen.at is launched - becoming an online shop where mobile phone users can purchase their prepaid card credit around the clock.
Since all major network operators offer their top up vouchers online, onlineaufladen.at quickly becomes the most successful online shop in the Austrian e-voucher sector.
paybox is split into paybox Service GmbH and paybox Bank AG. From now on, the aim is to offer different services: paybox Service GmbH continues to operate the e-voucher system, which has been used by retailers and mobile phone operators since 2004 and enables the real-time purchase of digital mobile phone credit. In the following years, the B2B shop will be further developed, with which numerous electronics retailers as well as retail chains will be acquired as business partners.
Due to new legislation, more than five million prepaid mobile phones will have to be registered by name by autumn 2019. paybox Service is developing a digital identity check in real time for this purpose, which will also be used in other sectors in the first year.
Gradually, paybox Ident (as the new product is called) will become an identity verification platform where the identity of consumers can be verified quickly and securely through several identity procedures.
